Recap: Successful Community Mitzvah Day at New Camden Cemetery

On Sunday, October 26, nearly 100 community members assisted the Jewish Community Foundation, Inc. at the New Camden Cemetery in cleaning up the grounds.

This outing was part of a yearlong refurbishment project of the two Jewish sections of the cemetery.

Participants included a broad array of community members, including teens from three separate groups: Congregation Sons of Israel, Temple Beth Sholom, and the South Jersey Buckets AAU Basketball organization.

Volunteers raked leaves, picked up debris, and assisted with updating the JCF's online database of burials, among other tasks.

Numerous community members also attended to pay respects to loved ones, many of whom noted that they were happy to see the cemetery in top condition compared to previous visits.

The JCF's New Camden Cemetery Committee, chaired by Sid Goldberg and including Harv Cohen, Fred Gross, Larry Gross, and Andi Levin, played an integral role in the cleanup day and the projects managed over the past year, such as uprighting fallen headstones, removing overgrown trees and brush, installing row markers and signage, and leveling sunken ground.

Additionally, Alyssa Gross, Linda Fox, and Sheryl Levin have been instrumental in updating the online database and uploading information and photos to other public websites that list burial locations.

Below are photos from the day, thanks to Brandy Gauthier, Jared Kaufman, and Rabbi Bryan Wexler for their photo submissions.
